Hello and welcome to the Hidden in Plain View blog.

Hidden in Plain View is an exhibition of 21 postcards from graphic designers across Northern Europe, which explore the idea of home as well as the old Scandinavian tradition of Steganography - the art and science of writing hidden messages within a seemingly innocuous postcard or missive

The exhibition takes place between 9th-26th October, as part of Design Event 08 and will be housed in VANE gallery, Forth Banks, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Over the coming weeks we will be introducing the designers involved, alongside bits and pieces related to the project.

To kick off the blog we thought we'd introduce ourselves to you. We are Danielle Pender and Beth Rowson, curators of the project. We asked the designers involved in the project a list of questions and we thought it only fair that we tackle a few of them as well. Today it is Beth's turn and tomorrow, mine.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Rowson..

What is your favourite aspect of the project?
We're all able to communicate so quickly now - I'm in favour of slowing down and taking our time a little.

What is your secret obsession?
Collecting dead insects - only pretty and interesting ones though, like wasps, bumble bees and beetles. I'm not bothered about random bugs. They're kept in a little box on my dressing table so if anyone's rifling through looking for a pair of earrings, they might get a surprise.

What is your favourite free activity
Apart from collecting dead insects? Swimming in the sea. Even when it's dead cold and the weather's awful, I love it. I got an awful cold after swimming in the North Sea in the pouring rain last summer but it was still brilliant fun.

What is your favourite holiday snap from this year or photograph from over the summer with a caption which sums it up

"Ummm... I'll see an old fashioned hair dresser thanks."

I spy with my little eye, something beginning with…
M. M for mess, mother-to-be, Marimekko curtains and mine.

What is your favourite word?
Schmetterling - German for butterfly.

What is your favourite childhood game?
Comfy cushions - a biza rre Rowson game that involved my Dad tickling me and my brother to death on the sofa while we pretended to be cushions.

WHat is the best bit of design you’ve ever seen.
The Mies van der Rohe pavillion in Barcelona fair took my breath away. On a less esoteric level, I think Harry Beck's London tube map is brilliant, especially when I go to other countries and get totally lost on the underground.
